Amaranthus tricolor is an annual plant known for its brightly colored foliage rather than its flowers. This plant is grown as an edible crop in some parts of the world. Easily grown from seeds, this rapidly-growing annual is popular for its brilliantly yellow color.
The seeds can be directly sowed in the garden after frosts have passed. The plant is very tolerant of heat, drought and poor soil.
Seeds can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date. Amaranthus plants perform best in well-draining soils and with limited fertilization. Over fertilization may cause dulling of foliage color.

Amaranthus yellow can reach approximately 12 - 24 inches in height. The beautiful leaves are approximately 3 - 6 inches long and 2 - 4 inches wide. To really attract attention, plant Joseph's Coat in a mass grouping for stunning color! Amaranthus plants are ideal for sunny borders.
Note: I have found that there is a tiny beetle that loves this plant in my neck of the woods. I treated the plant with diatomaceous earth – food grade and it takes care of that tiny stripe beetle. Neem oil is not a good idea at all. The plant does not like Neem oil…. I found this out the hard way, although the plant has survived it has bad blemishes on the leaves….ugh.
See video, I am trying this plant in a patio container. So far so good.
