Looks like a dinosaur egg on the vine.
Incredibly good, I was amazed. I saw several web postings stating the melon was ok but not great, I beg to differ. I went ahead and planted some seeds and “wow” it is my favorite now. The melon grows pretty big and when it turned a bright yellow it pulled easily away from the vine. You could smell it’s sweet melon fragrance even before my granddaughter and I cut into it. It tastes a cross between cantaloupe, a regular melon and slightly a banana flavor but even a bit sweeter and the texture is very tender like a melon and the flesh is a peach color. I will be planting more next year and yes my granddaughter loved it, too!
Planting, Direct Sow:
In zone 8, I planted in May, I waited for the soil to warm up a bit.
Full Sun, 7-8 hours
Well draining soil is recommended but mine was planted
in not so great of soil and it did just fine.
Place seed in ground about ¼” deep, keep lightly moist until germination.
Seem to be pest resistant
Seedling emerges in about 5 days
Space or thin to 2 – 3’ apart
About 5-8 lb melons, 2 to 3 melons per vine was my experience.
16" - 24" long melons
Harvest around 80 days, the melon goes from dull green to bright yellow. The tendril near the stem sometimes dries up and sometimes does not but the melon is a strong yellow color and cracks in the skin start showing up near the stem area and it is ready to be removed from the vine.
Enjoy, enjoy!
