Heirloom Black Beauty Eggplant Seeds, Open Pollinated, Non-GMO, 30 seeds per package.
Black Beauty Eggplant is a very good tasting eggplant with so many recipes but my favorite is breaded and fried, yum yum. Tasty, purplish, 8-in. (20-cm) fruits are great in a variety of dishes. Eggplants love warm weather, and they are damaged by cold. Plants produce 4 to 6 large fruit, or more if kept harvested and well watered.
When picked at peak maturity, these large glossy fruits offer impressive yields. Early to mature, Black Beauty eggplants are a well-suited option for those with shorter growing seasons. Additionally, compact and upright plants make them an ideal candidate for container gardening, too.
Fertilize: Once a month
Spacing: 18-24in (46-61cm)
Height: 24-28in (61-71cm)
Width: 18-24in (46-61cm)
Exposure: Full Sun - 6+ hours direct sun
Fruit size: 8in (20cm)
Days to harvest: 80
Growth: Determinate
Direct sow following directions below but sow seeds after all frost danger has past.
Sowing seeds indoors:
Sow indoors 8 weeks before the last frost in spring
Sow seeds ¼ inch deep
Keep the soil moist
Seedlings emerge in 10-21 days
As soon as seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light
Feed when they are 3-4 weeks old using a starter solution, half strength
Before planting in the garden, seedling plants need to be “hardened off”.
Planting in the Garden:
Full sun location with good rich moist organic soil. Make sure you did not grow tomatoes, peppers, eggplants or potatoes in the bed the previous year to avoid disease problems.
Eggplants should be set 2-3 feet apart in a row with the rows spaced 3-4 feet apart.
Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the root ball with your hands to encourage good root development.
Eggplants may also be planted in containers. Use a container at least 18-24 inches wide and deep and use a commercial potting mix rather than garden soil.
