A large perennial wildflower that is a magnet to butterflies and is closely related to the Joe-Pye-weeds, and will occasionally grow up to 6 feet. Boneset is a plant native to the wetlands of North America that has a long medicinal history and an attractive, distinctive appearance. While it is still sometimes grown and foraged for its healing properties, it may also appeal to American gardeners as a native plant that attracts pollinators.
Boneset goes by several other names, including agueweed, feverwort, and sweating plant. As you may guess from the names, this plant has a history of being used medicinally.
Growing boneset plants is relatively easy. The plants grow naturally in wetlands and along the banks of streams, and they perform well even in very wet soil. They like partial to full sun and make great additions to the woodland garden. The plants can be easily grown from seed, but they might not produce flowers for two to three years.
Sow seeds outside in fall or spring in a prepared bed free of weeds, good drainage, full to part sun. If the cold weather has past, then place seeds in damp sand place in frig (40F) for 4 weeks to break the seed’s dormancy. Plant seeds outside when temps are above 70 degrees. Sow seed by pressing the seed on to soil, do not cover seed, they need light to germinate. Keep soil lightly moist at all times until germination occurs. Cut the plant down to the ground after first frost.
To start indoors: scatter the seed on the surface of the soil in a flat; compress the soil slightly and keep it lightly moist until germination. Keep the soil consistently moist, and transplant seedlings as soon as they reach a height of 3” to 4”.
