One of the most tolerant and easy to grow melons. Grows Best In: Full sun but will tolerate a little shade here in Texas.
Fine netting, tough exterior, meltingly delicious sweet orange flesh, early yields. This variety is easy to grow. Its tough rind repels rot and insect attacks, and its early production makes it a good choice for northern growers.
Sow indoors under protection 2-3 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after last frost and when soil has warmed significantly. Provide fertile soil and plenty of space. As fruits mature, elevate using flat, porous stones or ceramic shards to avoid rotting fruit. Melons are ripe when they slip from the vine with a gentle tug; color will deepen and fruit will become aromatic.
Days to Germination: 7-10 Days
Days to Maturity: 85 Days
Planting Depth: 1/2"
Seed Spacing: Sow cantaloupe seeds roughly 4' apart in rows, keeping rows about 4' apart.
Or, sow a few seeds over a hill 9"-12" tall and 2' across. When plants are 3" tall, thin to 3 plants per hill. Use a balanced fertilizer to increase yield. This was so very sweet last year and very easy to maintain.
