Coleus Rainbow Seeds, Mix of Colors, Shade Lover Plant, over 40 seeds per package
Outstanding mixture; the best and brightest colors of medium-sized leaf varieties.
Coleus is grown for its brilliant, glowing foliage rather than flowers. This is a great mixture of bright colors. I love it on my front porch and it loves the morning sun for about 2 hours. It is so easy to grow from seed and really takes very little watering each week. It also looks great in the shady garden bed areas and gives you a great pop of color for shady garden borders, too.
Zones 4 - 10
Full to part shade, does best with morning sun.
Can be grown as a houseplant.
Deer resistant - yes
Coleus may be grown from seed sown early indoors and transplanted outside after frost.
Sowing Seed Indoors:
Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost.
Sow seeds lightly covered with fine soil.
Keep the soil moist. Coleus can benefit with bottom heat.
Seedlings emerge in 12-21 days.
As soon as seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light.
Thin to one seedling per cell when they have two sets of leaves.
Transplant hardened-off seedlings to the garden after the frost.
Planting Potted Plants in the Garden:
Select a location in full to part shade with good rich well-drained soil protected from wind.
Plants should stand about 12 inches apart in the garden.
Dig a hole for each plant large enough to accommodate the root ball.
Water thoroughly.
• Until plants become established, some protection from extreme winds and direct, hot sunlight may be necessary. Good air movement is also important.
• After new growth appears, a light fertilizer may be applied.
• Pinch stem tips just above a leaf pair to keep plants maintain their compact, bushy habit.
• Coleus also makes a fine house plant. Bring smaller plants indoors before the first frost.
