Direct sow after frost. This queen casts shade, so consider smaller plants in the area when planting. Good soil and plenty of water result in the largest plants, but sunflowers are hardy and will do well in less than ideal conditions. To save seeds, cover ripe flower heads with paper bags to keep the birds off.
