Lemon Drop Watermelon, (Citrullus vulgaris)
10 seeds per package.
This small yellow watermelon is unique and very tasty with yellow flesh and easy to grow from seed. It does not have that many seeds inside but it is well worth you planting this sweet melon in your garden. I have grown it now going on 3 years and it has done very well each year and no pest problems so far. I like to train mine to go up a trellis and add small cloth braces to hold them while they are ripening. They are small in size, about 1 to 2 pounds each and just enough for one person to eat. Although, after you taste it I doubt very seriously you will share. It is a sweet juicy yummy watermelon and my grandkids loved them. It is called lemon drop due to the color. The flavor is like a sweet juicy watermelon.
The vines can grow up to 10 feet long so a trellis does come in handy but not necessary. The vine produces approximately 4 to 7 melons each. The melons reach about 4 1/2 - 5" tall and 3 1/2 - 4" wide.
Try not to over water, they will split if over watering occurs. Watermelon plants have moderately deep roots and watering is seldom necessary unless the weather turns dry for a prolonged period. Withhold water as melons start to mature to intensify sweetness.
Knowing how to determine when a watermelon is perfectly ripe is not easy. One way favored by many gardeners is to watch the tendril closest to the melon stem. A tendril is a modified leaf or stem in the shape of slender, spirally coil. When it turns brown and dries up, the melon is ripe.
